Enabling the progress and social appropriation of development initiatives by facilitating understanding between stakeholders and by wider audiences
What we do
Socioenvironmental Consultancy / Communication and Outreach
We assess the relations between development initiatives and communities, to facilitate a holistic understanding of their complexities. We design strategies to circumvent conflicts and create participatory environments where stakeholders may come into synergy to fulfil their expected goals.
We can work on situational analysis and project diagnosis, on-the-ground follow-up and design of recommendations, and in the design and production of communication media such as exhibitions, audio-visual materials and publications.
Main Focus Areas
Socio-environmental development: from conflicts to synergies
We aim to facilitate conversations between local communities, governments and companies on specific projects of infrastructure, energy, water, transport and food production. Issues of social sustainability, community auditing, environmental protection, mitigation or restoration measures may demand the translation of messages and positions of each part, to implement balanced, consensual and mutually beneficial initiatives.
Social determinants of health and medical interventions
We assess and facilitate healthcare programs and strategies aimed at communities with socio-cultural traditions different from the mainstream, or hindered by inequalities and exclusion. We provide analysis of projects and their implementation agendas, translation of the key messages, and mediation between the stakeholders, in order to facilitate a participative advancement of these health initiatives.
Community-based conservation and sustainable use of biological resources
We can produce, facilitate and coordinate the discussion and collaborative implementation of projects of ecosystem and wildlife management and conservation, between local communities and environmental agencies.
Challenging cities and citizenships: contemporary urban diversities, inequalities and welfare
We aim to assess urban stakeholders (governments, planners and communities) on the better ways to manage contemporary cities, authentic laboratories to test people's capacity to live together and shape their habitats in productive and balanced ways.
Indigenous welfare and governance
We can design and facilitate platforms for the discussion of projects to secure environmental and territorial rights between indigenous communities and government agencies, as well as training programs to assess their progress. We can help to design and monitor the implementation of projects, focussing on fulfilment of goals and agreements, continuous communication, and long term sustainability.
Migrations and mobility: reshaping social and natural environments
We can help public and international agencies, local governments and communities deal with the challenges posed by migration in its different facets and scales, to manage them productively. This includes addressing socio-cultural and economic exclusion and integration, roads to citizenship, new forms of mobility, changing patterns of production and local economies, regional demographic imbalances in urban and rural settings, diasporas and refugees.
Dissemination of knowledge: cultural engineering and translation of technical contents in different formats
We can design, produce, and stage scientific exhibitions, conceptualize and edit publications, and conceive and produce videos and other audiovisual media to communicate the aims, history, and/or results of development projects of different types, facilitating their social appropriation by different social groups and audiences
This is our story
Our platform comprises a network of professionals from the social, medical and natural sciences, together with designers, artists and other creative talents, with a rich experience in human and environmental development projects, as well as in the social communication and hands-on implementation of such efforts.
Our core group has established over the years a conversation and collaboration around the subjects we work on, in academic settings and different types of applied initiatives. We are now connected in this platform to offer our services of consultancy, assessment, and social communication of development projects to Governments, Civil Society organizations, Multilateral Organizations, NGOs, Corporations, and private companies of different sizes.
We have worked on and researched independently in environmental management and community-based conservation projects, pastoral and agricultural production systems, health programs for Indigenous, rural and peri-urban communities, food security initiatives, Indigenous education and territorial rights, urban welfare and infrastructure development. Also in environmental, anthropological and scientific museography, design and production of publications for wide audiences.
This experience feeds the services offered and the project discussion forums of our platform. The geographical expertise of our network includes Latin America, Africa , Europe and Oceania. But the reach of OIKEiOS stretches beyond our main expertise areas, as our flexible arrangement of professional services commends us to finding the professionals experienced in the subject and geographical areas that we are solicited for.
